For a long time, I tried to go through life walking down the middle of the beam.
But it doesn’t work that way, because you are constantly being pulled from both sides.
For most people, the simplest way this happens is between ‘work’ & ‘family’. There are others, but, let’s stick to this one for today.
Perfect balance between work & family is a myth.
And, guess what? That’s not what they want.
What both your job and your family demand is your full attention; not just an ear or an eye while your brain is figuring out how soon you can get back to the other.
No, what your work & family require are your full attention in clumps. You’re going to feel like you are falling off the balance beam when you do this, but, you’re not.
When you turn off your phone for a few hours, you’re going to feel like your missing messages, and that there will be a pile to deal with later.
When you take an unscheduled day off to be there for your kids, same thing.
And when you zone in on that big project at work, and tune out everything else, it will get messy.
But in the end, you will be able to clean it all up …
… and you’ll have accomplished the most important thing of the moment, first.
