The waiter does just enough to keep his tip in play, which means blaming the missing meal on ‘someone else stealing it’.
The manager does just enough to keep his customers happy (and not complain over his head), thereby keeping his job. This means comping the meal if necessary, but not necessarily taking pride in the way the bathroom is kept.
The sign on the entrance to the back of the house does just enough to keep up corporate appearances that everyone should take pride in their work, but no one is really held accountable for that.
The customers are given just enough to keep coming back for more. Affordable, consistent, quality food … but never quite the best experience it could possibly be.
So close on so many levels, but never pushing hard enough to take that next step.
